Treatments benefits

    Shiatsu is commonly used for:

    • Muscular pain
    • Sports injuries
    • Migraine and tension headaches
    • Digestive problems
    • Stress
    • Anxiety
    • General wellbeing

    Shiatsu can help to:

    • Restore your body’s natural balance and promote its own healing process.
    • Reduce muscular tension and pain
    • Increase vitality and flexibility
    • Reduce the build-up of stress in your daily life

What to expect from a shiatsu treatment

During the treatment the practitioner works with the whole body using touch, comfortable pressure and manipulative techniques to release tension and tight muscles, adjust the body’s physical structure and balance its energy flow.

As shiatsu works on the whole body it addresses the underlying causes as well as the symptoms.

The client remains fully clothed during the treatment and no massage oil is used. It is best for the client to wear loose comfortable clothing and socks.

    Rejuvenating Facial Shiatsu Massage

This is a deeply relaxing facial massage, integrated with acupressure points to relax and enliven the face and neck. This combination promotes blood circulation, improves muscle tone and lymph drainage from the face, as well as bringing vitality and energy to the facial tissues.

The practitioner starts the treatment by releasing tension from the shoulders, upper back and neck. Techniques are then used on the face to tone and deeply relax the facial muscles. Some acupressure points are included to ‘lift’ the face. No oils or products are used.

  • Anyone with a hectic schedule will benefit from this physical and mental rebalancing. A Thai Yoga massage can increase flexibility, improve core strength, and help to manage pain in your shoulders, neck and back.

People who may choose to select this treatment:

    • Do not want to get undressed. Thai massage is performed fully clothed.
    • Have a spiritual outlook and want to rebalance their energy.
    • Find physical release to be relaxing.
    • Want to build on or complement a yoga practice.

People who should not choose a Thai Yoga massage:

    • Have high blood pressure or a history of blood clots.
    • May be pregnant. If you’re past your 1st trimester, choose a Pregnancy massage instead.
    • Want a traditional table massage experience. Try a Deep Tissue massage.

    Thai Yoga massage potential benefits:

    • Releases stiffness and speeds recovery time after exercise.
    • Develops flexibility in the body.
    • Reduces cortisol to de-stress the mind.
    • Promotes a sense of deep relaxation.

  • “Some is better than none.” What does that mean? Well, it varies from person to person. If you are just looking for some occasional relaxation, then a session every 3-6 weeks may be fine for you. However, if you are looking to address a specific condition, then it is recommended to go more frequently at first and then slowly taper down to a maintenance schedule. Sometimes more frequent 30-minute sessions can be effective until your goals are met and a maintenance schedule is in place. Frequency of sessions should be discussed with your massage therapist after your treatment when he/she has a better hands-on understanding of your particular muscular issues.

  • Your massage therapist may require you to fill out a health history form. Afterward the therapist will begin by asking you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions needing to be addressed, and to determine if massage is appropriate for you. Your massage therapist may perform certain assessments and testing to evaluate your condition and to see if you have any presenting complaints. It is important to list all health concerns and medications so the therapist can adapt the session to your specific needs without doing any harm. It is also important to list any allergies so the therapist is aware if he/she needs to use a different oil or lotion during the session.

  • You should undress to the level you are comfortable. For a full body massage, most get completely undressed. However, if you will be more comfortable during the session if you leave your underwear on, that’s fine. The therapist will work around the clothes you left on as best as he/she can. If removing all your clothes makes you too nervous and unable to relax, then you are not getting the optimal benefit from the session. Your massage therapist should give you privacy to undress and get comfortable on the table, or you always can go for treatment that you don’t have to undress.

  • This depends on the type of massage and the depth of the strokes. A light, relaxing massage that doesn’t probe very deep into the muscles, shouldn’t hurt. With that being said, there is a ‘feels good’ hurt and an ‘ouch, stop it’ hurt. A good massage, even a really deep tissue massage, should always stay in the ‘feels good’ hurt range. Pain can be an indication that the muscle is possibly injured or inflamed and pressure should be adjusted. Also, pain can cause you to tighten up and negate the relaxing effects of the massage. The most effective and deepest massage always works with your body’s natural response, not against it.

  • Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience a significant decrease or freedom from long-term aches and pains. Many feel a little slowed down for a short period and then notice an increase of energy, heightened awareness and increased productivity which can last for days. If you received a deep massage, you may be slightly sore the next day – much like a good workout at the gym. Sometimes a hot shower, or a soak in the tub can ease this soreness. After your session you should increase your water intake a bit. Just a glass or two more than normal is usually fine. This helps keep your body’s tissues hydrated and healthy.

  • Honestly, its hard to say. Every person is unique and every condition is unique to each person. It may take one session or it may take several. You and your therapist will be able to talk more specifically about this after your first session and he/she has had a chance to evaluate your body’s tissues.

  • In my opinion there are few conditions which would prevent you from enjoying massage. You should not book a massage if you have a fever, cold/flu, or contagious skin infection. That’s it. There are many other conditions in which your therapist may need to adapt his/her techniques (i.e. arthritis or osteoporosis) or avoid an area completely (i.e. cuts or burns). With some conditions it is a good idea to get an approval from your physician before you receive massage (cancer, certain heart conditions, pregnancy). This doesn’t mean you can’t get massage. But its always better to err on the side of caution. Your therapist can advise you about your specific needs.

  • We advise not to have a massage on a full stomach and to avoid drinking alcohol before and after to avoid feeling dizzy.

  • We advise not to have a massage on a full stomach and to avoid drinking alcohol before and after to avoid feeling dizzy.

  • Timo Massage Therapy has a 24 hour cancellation policy. If you would like to avoid paying for a session you cannot attend, please give a minimum of 24 hours notice. There are two reasons for this – Firstly, I have other clients that may be desperate to get an appointment and secondly, it’s my livelihood. Without enough notice to fill the slot, I lose the income and someone else loses a chance to get a treatment.

Kendon (London)
For years I have searched London for a high-calibre shiatsu therapist with the same physical power and discipline as the traditional Japanese shiatsu I have come to know in Canada and Asia. I finally found my answer in Mário de Sousa, whose passionate approach to Seiki shiatsu has brought relief to my 12 years of chronic back pain. Mário is intuitive and generous, and I salute his dogged determination to solve my problem.

"There are two qualities that make up a great massage therapist. One, like all great musicians or artists, is that you need to be born with that special touch and passion and secondly you need to have learnt the modalities and continue to expand your knowledge of bodywork. Mario is that rare person who has both qualities. I highly recommend him.If you are looking for a great massage, a cut above the rest, do not hesitate to contact him."Daniel (massage therapist and teacher)
I had my first massage with Mario about 6 months ago and I have never in my life felt as relaxed and at peace as I did at the end of 2 hours. It was the best massage I'd ever had. I tried to find someone to work on my bad shoulder who was more local and basically just wasted my time and money. A second session with Mario and the following day I had much more flexibility and less pain in my arm and a general sense of flexibility and well being through my whole body. My yoga practice has been much better too - I can stretch further and postures are easier. Mario is always completely professional and I have been recommending him to all my friends.
Anne-Marie Carratu - Reiki Master Teacher
As a therapist myself, I have received many treatments from fellow therapists and am delighted to have received both Shiatsu and Aromatherapy Hot Stone Massages from Mario de Sousa. Mario’s treatments are an amazing experience as he has learned his therapies very professionally and has ‘magic hands’ as he expertly works on the body to deliver the best treatment possible. Mario creates the perfect atmosphere to carry out his treatments and I find myself incredibly relaxed with him. I highly enjoy the therapeutic benefits of his touch, as areas of muscle tension melt under his gentle and knowledgeable hands. Mario strives to offer the best holistic treatments possible and I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to improve their physical, mental or emotional wellbeing.
